EU, Britain join condemnation of sexual deepfake images created with Grok AI
The EU and UK regulators have launched probes into Grok after it generated non-consensual sexualized deepfake images, with 98% of deepfakes online being pornographic, mostly depicting women.
- On Tuesday, the United Kingdom urged Elon Musk's X and its AI arm xAI to urgently address reports that Grok produced nonconsensual intimate deepfake images.
- Users of X reportedly prompted Grok to produce sexualised images of women and minors in minimal clothing, violating United Kingdom law on nonconsensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material.
- Technology Secretary Liz Kendall called the content 'absolutely appalling' and emphasized the UK government has legislated to ban explicit nonconsensual deepfakes.
- Ofcom said it had made 'urgent contact' with X and xAI to clarify steps protecting UK users, while French officials reported X to prosecutors and Indian authorities sought explanations; United States regulators remain silent.
- Platform statements show both defensive messaging and promises of enhanced blocking as xAI acknowledged 'isolated cases' and X's Safety account said it removes illegal content and suspends accounts.
