Elon Gust and Dame Judi Drench among storm names sent to Met Office
Over 50,000 names were submitted for the 2025/26 UK storm season with about 20 selected, reflecting a mix of popular and pun-inspired entries, the Met Office said.
- This year, the UK Met Office revealed its 21 chosen storm names after a Freedom of Information request, selected from more than 50,000 public suggestions for 2025/26.
- Launched in 2015, the public naming programme lets the Met Office, Met Éireann and KNMI jointly name storms with medium or high impact to improve awareness.
- People proposed playful and surreal names such as Stormy McStormFace and Rainy McRainFace, puns like Dame Judi Drench and Elon Gust, while more than 600 submissions targeted oil firms with names like Oily McOilFace and BPocalypse.
- The Met Office spokesperson said naming storms raises awareness and helps keep people safe as spring approaches, meaning many names may not be used after Storm Chandra hit the UK and Ireland at the end of January.
- This year, the final choices blended popular picks and playful entries, mixing the most popular nominations with funny associations, while about 20 names are usually chosen each season despite thousands of public suggestions.
