Elk damages car during rut at Lake Cowichan
Security footage shows the elk chasing a female before smashing through the windshield and briefly getting its antlers inside the car.
On Monday, Sept. 14, a male elk smashed into Lake Cowichan resident Bruce Roach's 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme while chasing a female through Evergreen Place on Renfrew Street.
While elk wandering Lake Cowichan is typical, rutting males lose awareness of their surroundings during mating season. Sam Hildebrandt, the 55-plus complex manager, said they focus solely on reproduction.
Security footage captured the collision at approximately 5:30 a.m., showing the elk running onto the hood and smashing through the windshield before escaping. Hildebrandt discovered the damage while placing garbage cans out for Monday pickup.
Roach faces his third major repair in two years, the first caused by a wild animal, though finding parts for the 38-year-old vehicle will extend the timeline significantly.
Despite viewing the security footage, Roach remained shocked by the incident. Hildebrandt noted the footage was remarkable but understandable—"they don't have a clear sense of their surroundings" during rut.
