Bodies of 11 People Found Floating in Libyan Waters

The NGO said the bodies were in advanced decomposition and that some still wore clothes while others were kept afloat by tire inner tubes.

  • On Friday, the Albatross aerial monitoring plane operated by SOS Mediterranee and Humanitarian Pilots Initiatives discovered 11 decomposing bodies floating in Libyan waters approximately 105 kilometres from Zuwarah.
  • The International Organisation for Migration reported a 111% increase in migrant deaths in the first four months of 2026, with 821 people dying or missing, while Central Mediterranean arrivals fell 46% to 8,577.
  • On Wednesday, Albatross crew witnessed two Libyan interceptions within an hour: a blue wooden boat carrying around 50 people without life-saving equipment, then a black overcrowded rubber boat with around 30 people including children.
  • SOS Mediterranee alleged the Libyan Coast Guard ordered rescue vessel SOS Humanity to leave, then pursued a rubber boat for approximately 40 minutes with ramming maneuvers while endangering lives.
  • The timing and circumstances of this shipwreck remain unknown, yet tens of thousands continue attempting the Central Mediterranean crossing annually despite conditions growing more dangerous; fewer departures have not reduced deaths.
