Hydroelectric, the main producer of electricity in Romania and supplier for over 600,000 domestic customers, announces the temporary interruption of invoice operations in the period 1 – 10 August 2025. The measure comes as a result of legislative changes which enter into force on 1 August and provides for an increase in the VAT rate applicable to electricity from 19% to 21%.
DECRYPTAGE - In order to comply with EU standards, the government will increase VAT on energy subscriptions from 5.5% to 20%, partly offset by lower consumption rates.

As of 1 August 2025, the fixed share of electricity and gas subscriptions will no longer benefit from the reduced VAT rate of 5.5%, but will be subject to the full rate of 20%. This will increase the bill, especially for small consumers, despite the compensation announced by the government.
