Bloc MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay leaves caucus to run for Parti Québécois
Savard-Tremblay will join four other MPs leaving Parliament, a move that could trigger five byelections and shift the balance in the House.
Bloc MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay resigned his seat to run for the Parti Québécois in the fall provincial election, now listed as an Independent on the House of Commons website.
Radio-Canada first reported the move, though the Parti Québécois communications office declined to confirm it officially while noting that leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon will visit St-Hyacinthe, Que., on Friday to announce a nomination candidate.
Savard-Tremblay joins four other MPs, including former environment minister Steven Guilbeault and ex-NDP member Alexandre Boulerice, slated to resign at the end of the current Parliament sitting.
The five upcoming byelections could jeopardize Prime Minister Mark Carney's majority; losing three Liberal MPs would leave the governing party with 171 seats in the House, just one shy of the threshold.
Once seats are vacated, the government has 11 to 180 days to call a byelection, with campaigns required to last at least 36 days before voters head to the polls.
