Elections Alberta issues warning regarding spoof website - CityNews Calgary
Elections Alberta says the fake site uses fabricated elector data and has contacted enforcement and cybersecurity agencies while seeking to have it removed.
- On Thursday, Elections Alberta identified a spoof website, electionsab.ca, designed to mimic its legitimate URL, elections.ab.ca, exploiting public concerns about the recent unauthorized use of the List of Electors.
- The fake site generates fictitious names, addresses, and phone numbers starting with 555, alongside fake "Elector ID" numbers, which Elections Alberta confirmed is completely fabricated and not derived from the official list.
- Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure stated the activity is intended to "spoof" Elections Alberta and reduce public confidence, and he contacted cybersecurity agencies while attempting to have the website taken down.
- Current "Deepfake" provisions in the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act do not cover this disinformation, and McClure noted his office lacks the legislative authority to investigate the site.
- Albertans are encouraged to report similar activity or question information purported to be from Elections Alberta by contacting 780-427-7191 or emailing info@elections.ab.ca for verification.
