El-Rufai Files Fresh N10bn Suit Against ICPC over Family Access

The former Kaduna governor seeks N10 billion and court orders after alleging the ICPC blocked family visits and denied him food, medication and legal access.

  • On August 13, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai filed a ₦10 billion lawsuit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission at the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging the agency blocked family visits while he remains in custody.
  • El-Rufai, through lawyer Ubong Akpan, alleged ICPC officials stopped his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and son, Abba El-Rufai, from visiting him. He claims this denial violates constitutional rights despite an existing court order directing the agency to allow family access.
  • Principal Secretary Mohammed Shaba stated in an affidavit that the restriction caused El-Rufai "humiliation, emotional trauma, anxiety and psychological distress." The suit argues the ICPC acted inconsistently with Sections 34, 37, and 46 of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
  • Shaba referenced an April 1 order by Justice R.M. Aikawa directing the ICPC to allow access to counsel and physicians. He argued detainees should not be held incommunicado and that the agency remains subject to judicial oversight regarding detention conditions.
  • The former governor seeks a court declaration that the continued denial of family access is "unconstitutional, illegal, null and void." He requested an order granting him "unhindered and reasonable access" to family members and counsel throughout his detention.
