Egypt says describing displacement of Palestinians as voluntary is 'nonsense'
Egypt confirms Rafah crossing is for humanitarian aid only and denies that Palestinians are voluntarily displaced amid ongoing Gaza conflict and ceasefire talks, officials said.
- On Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said in Nicosia, Cyprus with U.N. refugee chief Philippe Lazzarini, `If there is a manmade famine , it is to push residents out of their land. It is nonsense to say that this is voluntary displacement`.
- The Rafah border crossing, Egypt's only direct link to the Gaza Strip, is reserved for aid, and Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed it will not be used to displace Palestinians.
- The military's intensified campaign in recent weeks hit multiple high-rises, including the 15-story al-Sousi tower and the 13-floor Mushtaha tower in western Gaza City, the Israel Defense Forces said.
- Diplomats moved to intensify implementation of the latest ceasefire framework as Badr Abdelatty spoke with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on Friday about the 60-day ceasefire proposal including return of half the hostages.
- Netanyahu backed allowing voluntary departures and urged other countries to accept displaced people, a position Badr Abdelatty rejected as Israel called on Gaza City residents to move south and resume hostage negotiations.
