Teachers in Germany have not worked more frequently with full hours. At the same time, the age of teachers increases. However, there are differences between the federal states.
A quarter (25.4%) of teachers in the school year 2024/2025 were between 50 and 59 years old, and a further 10.0% were 60 years old and older. Thus, more than one third of teachers (35.4%) were 50 years old or older, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Compared to this, the proportion of younger teachers is smaller: the under 35s accounted for a good fifth (20.3%) of teaching staff in general education schools.
