Launched in 2024 but strongly criticized, the need groups in French and mathematics at the college will become optional as soon as next fall.
The flagship measure of the "Knowledge Shock" desired by the former Minister of National Education Gabriel Attal, is officially abandoned by a decree issued on Thursday 12 March.
The need groups imposed courses in mathematics and French in the 6th and 5th grades. They were organized according to the need and the levels identified by the students. The need groups in French and mathematics at the college, imposed since 2024 by Gabriel Attal, become optional from September 2026. A decree published on Thursday 12 March formalizes this decision, after a review deemed "not unanimously convincing" by the Ministry of Education.
