Gov. Dunleavy Promised a Fiscal Plan. Alaska Lawmakers Aren’t so Sure.
- On Tuesday in Juneau, the Alaska Legislature convened in a joint session to overturn Governor Mike Dunleavy’s veto of a bill allocating funding for education.
- The veto opposed allocating over $200 million to the National Education Association without conditions, but several Republicans joined Democrats to override it with a 46-14 vote.
- House Bill 57 allocated resources for student transit, prohibited cellphone use during school hours, and relaxed rules for establishing charter schools, though it did not incorporate some of Dunleavy’s preferred measures, such as a statewide open enrollment policy.
- Rep. Justin Ruffridge expressed his support on Facebook by stating that HB 57 brings positive advancements for students, teachers, and communities throughout the state, while the recent veto override marked the first successful one since 2002.
- The override signals growing legislative opposition to Dunleavy and complicates his call for bipartisan cooperation on a fiscal plan amid Alaska’s structural budget challenges.
