Edmonton crime rate down, but growing concern over repeat offenders, social disorder
EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA, JUL 29 – Edmonton police link resurgence of extortion and arson to the Bishnoi gang targeting affluent South Asian residents, with six new cases reported since May 2025, officials said.
- Amid rising attacks, Edmonton police warned at a town hall on Monday night that six more extortion and arson cases have emerged since May targeting the South Asian community.
- Interim Chief of Police Warren Driechel said the investigation into about 40 extortions and arsons linked to Project Gaslight was ongoing after several suspects were arrested in 2024.
- Amid the resurgence, a threatened victim described, `extorters demanded $100,000 and threatened to kidnap his children`, and he remains worried for his safety despite informing police.
- To strengthen investigations, Edmonton police support calls from Alberta and B.C. governments and the mayor of Brampton to designate the gang as a 'terrorist entity', which would aid national focus.
- Edmonton police will seek extradition of Maninder Dhaliwal from the United Arab Emirates and urged community members at Monday's town hall to report crimes and youth recruitment.
