Edmonton councillor applies to name street ‘Forever Canadian Avenue’
Michael Janz will seek approval to rename the street to honor a petition that collected more than 400,000 signatures.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, Edmonton Councillor Michael Janz announced plans to apply to the Edmonton Naming Committee to rename a section of 99 Avenue near the Alberta legislature "Forever Canadian Avenue."
The proposal honors the "Forever Canadian" petition, a pro-federalist movement led by Thomas Lukaszuk that collected over 400,000 signatures from Albertans wishing to remain in Canada amid rising separatist sentiments.
If approved by the committee, the stretch of 99 Avenue between 107 Street and 109 Street will bear the new name, with Janz hoping to celebrate Canada Day in July on the renamed street.
Janz argues the "spectre of separatism" threatens investment and jobs in Alberta, while the renaming celebrates the largest non-partisan citizen movement in the province's history, with costs borne by the applicant.
The announcement follows a judge's decision to strike down a separate separatist petition backed by Premier Danielle Smith, which the court ruled failed to consult First Nations regarding government changes.
