Adorable Capybara Pup Born at Edinburgh Zoo Becomes First in Scotland for 18 Years
Keepers say the newborn male will cling to his mother for six months before learning to eat leaves and explore the sloth house.
On Monday, May 11, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland Edinburgh Zoo welcomed Scotland's first baby Linne's two-toed sloth, born to first-time parents Feira and Nico, both aged six.
Keepers named the baby Atty in honor of Sir David Attenborough, who celebrated his 100th birthday on May 8, recalling a 2017 BBC interview where he chose the sloth as his favorite animal.
For the first six months, Atty will cling to Feira's stomach before learning to eat leaves by sampling food from her mouth; sloths native to South America sleep about 15 hours daily.
Visitors can view the pair at the Sloth House starting at 2pm on Wednesday, May 13, though staff advise guests to check opening hours upon arrival as access may vary over coming weeks.
This birth follows other recent conservation successes at Edinburgh Zoo, including a capybara pup earlier this month—the first born in Scotland in 18 years—and flamingo chicks at the end of last year.
A sloth cub has been born for the first time at a Scottish zoo, and has been named Atty in honor of David Attenborough. According to zookeepers, the cub shows a lot of personality, and visitors can already see his little face during their visit.
