ECP Reserves Verdict in KP Reserved Seats Case
KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA, PAKISTAN, JUL 14 – Election Commission of Pakistan delayed its verdict amid disputes over reserved seats allocation between major parties, with 21 seats for women and 4 for minorities at stake.
- On July 15, 2025, the Election Commission of Pakistan postponed its decision regarding the distribution of reserved seats within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly after hearing all involved parties.
- The case arose following the July 9, 2024 ruling by the Peshawar High Court, which invalidated the ECP's seat allocation notifications and instructed the commission to reassign the reserved seats after consulting with the involved parties within a ten-day timeframe.
- The dispute involved PML-N demanding more reserved seats after independent Tariq Awan joined it late, while JUI-F counsel Kamran Murtaza explained late joining does not increase allocated seats; PTI raised concerns about seat correlation and by-election complications.
- During the distribution process, JUI-F presented seven qualifying candidates and was granted 10 reserved seats, whereas PML-N had six candidates and contested their comparatively smaller share; meanwhile, the court suspended the oath-taking for these seats pending the ECP’s concluding determination.
- The ECP urged the KP governor and chief minister to convene the assembly immediately to enable oath administration for new members and facilitate the July 21 Senate elections, as the oath-taking delay affects the electoral process.
