The Hawaiian goose, or nene (pronounced “nay nay”), is the state bird of Hawaii. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the nene is the rarest goose in the world. In the 1950s slightly more than 20 existed. Thanks to USFWS recovery efforts, the total number is now more than 2,000. I always wanted to see a nene in the wild. On a trip to Hawaii, I finally did.
