Economic forum: Despite challenges, 'solid' growth, more rate hikes ahead
Karen Dynan said growth should stay solid as inflation eases gradually and the Fed is likely to deliver three more quarter-point hikes.
On Tuesday, Harvard University economics professor Karen Dynan told the Peterson Institute that the U.S. economy should remain resilient next year despite global challenges including wars and trade tensions.
Falling energy prices and Federal Reserve tightening lead Dynan to predict gradual inflation declines, even as she anticipates the Fed will raise rates further.
Growth in AI has supported the economy, while the Energy Information Administration forecasts Brent crude prices will decline to $84 per barrel next year.
Dynan expects three more quarter-point rate hikes from the Fed, though she noted these likely won't occur until after the October meeting.
The U.S. faces long-term challenges from persistent deficits and a federal debt exceeding $40 trillion, though political polarization makes immediate legislative action unlikely.
