INEC Denies Registering Two New Political Parties
INDIA, JUN 26 – The Election Commission is targeting 345 dormant parties nationwide that have not contested elections since 2019 and whose offices are untraceable in its first phase of cleanup.
- On Thursday, the Election Commission of India began delisting proceedings for 345 RUPPs as part of a nationwide cleanup exercise.
- The ECI's delisting of 345 RUPPs stems from over 2,800 parties failing to meet registration criteria since 2019, including being untraceable or inactive, to improve electoral transparency.
- Chief Electoral Officers of states and UTs are issuing show-cause notices to RUPPs, granting parties hearings before final delisting decisions by the ECI.
- The delisting of 345 dormant RUPPs prevents them from contesting elections, aiming to improve transparency ahead of the Bihar polls.
- Further delisting phases are planned, with parties able to be relisted without fresh recognition, though the Supreme Court has barred derecognition under law.
