EC asks 22 states and UTs to prepare for SIR expected to begin in April.
- On February 19, 2026, the Election Commission of India told Chief Electoral Officers of the 22 States and Union Territories to complete preparatory work as the SIR is expected to start in April 2026.
- The SIR is designed to improve voter-list accuracy by mapping with the 2002–2004 electoral roll and training Booth-Level Officers to identify foreign illegal migrants by checking place-of-birth.
- The Census first phase starting April 1 involves 30 lakh enumerators and overlaps with BLOs who are largely government school teachers, prompting discussions to stagger resource use.
- Extending the SIR now will complete the nationwide revision, covering 40 crore electors in 17 states and five UTs, with registration, verification, and removal of ineligible names.
- Opposition leaders argue the SIR targets certain voters, with parties including Congress and Trinamool Congress challenging it in the Supreme Court and Mamata Banerjee recently appealing against it.
