Congo reports attack on Ebola burial team as cases rise
Health officials said 363 confirmed infections and 62 deaths have strained contact tracing as the outbreak spreads across Congo and into neighboring countries.
- In the South Kivu town of Katana, a burial team was assaulted and forced to abandon a coffin, while 11 Ebola patients fled isolation facilities in Ituri as the outbreak spread to another health zone.
- Rimba became the 17th affected health zone in Ituri and the 25th nationally, according to a June 3 report, as Congo recorded 363 confirmed Ebola infections and 62 deaths from the Bundibugyo strain.
- Surveillance teams reached fewer than half of more than 4,200 contacts in the previous 24 hours, with the contact-tracing rate at 46 per cent, falling short of the 95 per cent target.
- WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on June 3 that ending the outbreak requires "leadership, ownership, partnership and trust," as investigations continue into cross-border spread involving an infected traveller who visited the UAE and Uganda.
- Health officials warn that incidents like the Katana attack could spark new chains of transmission, as weak contact tracing, attacks on burial teams, and community resistance remain principal obstacles to controlling the outbreak.
