Eaton Fire survivors travel to California capital to get help
Survivors are urging support for a proposed $25 million disaster recovery fund as they seek grants, permits and rebuilding help.
- On Tuesday, over 100 Eaton Fire survivors and allies traveled to Sacramento to advocate for the $25 million CARE Fund, seeking disaster recovery grants for displaced families.
- The 24-day blaze killed at least 19 people and destroyed more than 9,400 structures, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, making it the second most destructive wildfire in California history.
- Altadena survivor Damon Blunt, who lived in the area for 26 years before losing his home and truck, said "loans are not going to cut it" for victims needing grants to rebuild.
- Pasadena Community Job Center director Jose Madera called out Gov. Gavin Newsom for unfulfilled post-disaster promises, while Pasadena NAACP President Brandon Lamar said recovery "is not complete" until every displaced family returns home.
- Multiple organizations including the Coalition, Humane Immigrant Rights, End Child Poverty, Altadena Rising, Tribe Rise, and Dena Rise are working to prevent permanent displacement of low-income families and renters.
