Eating 170g of One Food Daily Cuts Heart Attack and Stroke Risk
Researchers found that eating about 170 g of pulses a day and 60-80 g of soy foods cut high blood pressure risk by 30%.
Researchers from King's College London found that consuming legumes and soy foods is linked to a reduced risk of high blood pressure, with participants experiencing 16% and 19% lower risk respectively.
Ideal daily intake appears to be approximately 170g of legumes and 60-80g of soy, which provide potassium, magnesium, and fiber—nutrients known to help maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
Current consumption across Europe and the UK remains low, with average intakes of only 8-15g per day, far below the recommended 65 to 100g for overall cardiovascular health.
Tracy Parker, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation , said the study "adds to the growing evidence" that legumes and soy support healthier blood pressure as part of a balanced diet.
Maeva May, director of research at the Stroke Association, suggests "simple swaps" like choosing beans and soy instead of processed meats can help manage blood pressure and prevent stroke consequences.
