easyJet Makes Major Change for Passengers Flying in 237 Planes
easyJet will fit 237 new planes with Mirus' lighter, slimmer seats from 2028, saving up to 500kg per aircraft and adding two inches of legroom without changing seat pitch.
- EasyJet announced on Tuesday it has placed an order with British manufacturer Mirus for Kestrel seats to be installed across 237 new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft starting in 2028, providing passengers with up to two inches of additional legroom.
- Mirus explained that the seats utilize carbon fiber instead of traditional plastic, allowing for a slimmer profile with a "fixed recline" of 22 degrees that positions the passenger's hips and spine further back to generate extra space.
- EasyJet said the seats will be more than 20% lighter than current models, leading to a weight reduction of up to 500kg per aircraft and an estimated fleet-wide annual fuel saving of more than 12,936 tonnes.
- Mirus Chief Executive Ben McGuire called the deal "one of the largest single-model aircraft seat awards ever," adding that the manufacturer is committed to "enhancing passenger experience and comfort, while delivering sustainability and significant operational cost savings."
- Earlier this month, consumer group Which? published research showing the majority of EasyJet's existing aircraft have a seat pitch of 29 inches, while competitors like Ryanair and Lufthansa operate cabins with 28-inch seat pitch.
