Egg prices are falling nationally, but grocery stores may not be ready to ease off the cost
- Earlier this month, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins appeared on Fox News and was asked about the upward-spiraling price of eggs, which had become a presidential campaign issue.
- As egg prices rose, people in places like Lakeland began seeking out chicks, but on a Monday, both Lay's and Tractor Supply in Lakeland were out of stock.
- Lay's was expecting 450 chicks at the end of May and more in June, but a salesman who declined to be named at another store reported that a shipment of 1,000 chicks sold out in just 45 minutes.
- Rollins suggested a silver lining, saying, "How do we, in our backyards weve got chickens too in our backyard how do we solve for something like this and people are sort of looking around and thinking, Wow, maybe I could get a chicken in my backyard, and its awesome,", while Lay's salesperson Olivia Newman admitted, "We severely underestimated the number of people who want chickens."
- Although egg prices have fallen nationally for the third week in a row from a high of $9.99 for a dozen large white eggs, more than double the $3.27 reported in the USDA Egg Markets Overview, businesses across the city are still struggling to manage the high cost of eggs.
