After more than twenty years of waiting, East Timor will finally join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), a young democracy of 1.3 million inhabitants that should boost an alliance that is often described as purely economic and security.
East Timor has been admitted to ASEAN, the Southeast Asian alliance of countries. The country first applied to join the association in 2011 and has been eligible to attend meetings since 2022, but only became a full member on Sunday.
