East Midlands Airport Evacuated After 'Concern' over Item of Luggage
Security screening flagged a checked-in bag, prompting an evacuation and delays for several flights before investigators cleared the item.
East Midlands Airport was evacuated at 9.30am on Tuesday after security screening equipment highlighted a concern with a checked-in item of luggage, prompting the terminal to be cleared as a 'precautionary measure' with passengers moved onto the runway.
The evacuation followed a security screening alert that identified an anomaly in checked baggage, triggering the airport's standard protocol for responding to potential threats.
Multiple airlines faced disruptions, with Ryanair flights to Faro, Knock and Murcia delayed alongside a Jet2 flight to Chania, while incoming aircraft circled overhead and a Kos-bound flight experienced a 30 minute delay.
Investigations concluded the luggage posed no threat, prompting the airport to resume normal operations shortly after 11.00am with passengers re-entering the terminal.
Flights leaving East Midlands Airport appeared largely on schedule by afternoon, with the airport apologising for disruptions and stating "the safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority.
