A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Halmahera, Indonesia, at 02:31 UTC on Friday, July 3, 2026, according to the USGS, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The epicenter was located 59 km west of Tobelo in North Maluku at a depth of 120 km, affecting nearly 597 000 people who felt light shaking and 350 000 who experienced weak tremors.
Ternate resident Umar Abbas told AFP he panicked during the tremor, recounting, "I was sitting and having coffee at a roadside stall when suddenly my chair started rocking."
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency stated the quake posed no tsunami threat, while the USGS issued a Green alert indicating low likelihood of significant damage.
Positioned on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," Indonesia and neighboring nations frequently experience seismic activity; many residents live in vulnerable unreinforced brick structures despite resistant buildings existing in the region.
The blast occurred off the island of Halmahera and did not lead to the issue of a tsunami alert. Indonesia is located in the Pacific Fire Ring, one of the most seismically active areas in the world.
