Early voting begins Friday in Minnesota: What voters need to know
About 150,000 voters live in mail-ballot precincts only, and all 87 counties will offer early in-person voting starting Oct. 16, officials said.
On Friday, Sept. 18, 2026, Minnesota begins the election process as counties mail absentee ballots and select locations open for in-person voting ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm election.
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a new United States Postal Service rule on Monday that aligned with President Donald Trump's executive order to overhaul mail ballot procedures.
Secretary of State Steve Simon said the ruling restores "full confidence" in mail ballot access, following a record 1.1 million votes cast in the Aug. 11 primary attributed to competitive races.
All 87 counties will offer early in-person voting starting Oct. 16, where voters can place ballots directly into tabulators like on Election Day, expanding access across the state.
Eligible Minnesotans aged 18 or older who are U.S. citizens and residents of at least 20 days may register online until Oct. 13, though same-day registration remains available for the Nov. 3 election.
