Daily Blood Tests Helped Curb E. Coli Complications in Calgary's 2023 Outbreak

Early, daily testing and hydration monitoring reduced hospitalizations to 40 and hemolytic uremic syndrome cases to 7% among 285 children in the 2023 outbreak, study finds.

Summary by Medical Xpress
Research conducted by University of Calgary scientists informed patient care when hundreds of children became sick from exposure to a severe strain of E. coli. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea. One in five infected children experience life-threatening complications.
