DVSA outlines 3 UK driving test changes for learner drivers coming in spring 2026
Learners can only make two booking changes and must move tests to nearby centres while tests include longer independent driving and fewer emergency stops.
- This year the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency announced changes to booking and practical driving test rules from spring 2026, with exact start dates confirmed nearer the time.
- Test-Content updates show candidates recently spend longer on faster roads and independent driving may be extended, while manoeuvre stops drop from four to three and emergency-stop frequency falls to one in seven tests.
- Under the new booking rules, learner drivers may make two changes to appointments, including date, time, test centre, or swaps, and must cancel and rebook if more changes are needed.
- Under the cancellation rules, learner drivers must give at least 10 full working days’ notice for a refund, with Monday to Saturday counting as working days, DVSA says.
- Driving instructors will continue to use the online service to manage availability, and the Department for Transport is consulting on a Minimum Learning Period this year.
