DVSA make big change to 'vital' manoeuvre on driving tests in the UK
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency reduced emergency stops to one in seven tests and extended independent driving time to better reflect real driving conditions, the DVSA said.
- Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency rolled out changes altering UK driving tests, reducing emergency stop frequency and updating manoeuvres and independent driving elements.
- The DVSA says the changes are meant to better represent conditions many motorists face, requiring learners to spend longer on faster roads and drive on rural roads during tests.
- Here are the main numeric changes: learners will make fewer stops, reduced from four to three, emergency stops fall from one in three to one in seven tests, and examiners may extend independent driving to the full test.
- Learners can still fail tests for emergency stops if their reaction is slow, braking is gentle, or control lapses, and examiners will instruct and simulate the stop during the test.
- Tests also require three reversing exercises plus eyesight and 'show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions, while emergency stop scenarios are practised shortly to simulate real hazards.
