Dutch woman crowned World Porridge Making Champion
Saarberg repeated her Netherlands-winning recipe as 30 competitors from 14 countries entered the annual oat contest.
Over the weekend, Gina Saarberg won the World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland, claiming the Golden Spurtle trophy and defeating 30 competitors from 14 countries.
Sponsored by Hamlyns of Scotland, the competition celebrates Porridge through traditional and speciality recipes, attracting global participants from Australia, South Africa, the Czech Republic, and beyond to the Highlands.
Saarberg prepared her traditional Porridge using organic pinhead oats from Dutch company Halm and water brought from the Netherlands, noting that adding salt 'brings out the nuances and different aromas.'
Rob Reid from Sydney, Australia, won the speciality title with his Porridge cannoli, drawing on his Scottish and Sicilian heritage and crafting the dish within 30 minutes.
Expert judges including Neil Mugg, Gilmour, and Clare Coghill evaluated entries, while Porridge chieftain Alan Rankin praised the 'absolute pleasure' of welcoming global competitors to Carrbridge.
She even brought water from the Netherlands to Scotland in an attempt to win. And with exactly the same ingredients with which she became Dutch champion in June, Gina Saarberg from Zutphen won the World Oatmeal Championship on Saturday. The 28-year-old can now call herself World Porridge Making Champion. Her prize: the Golden Spurtle.
