During Netanyahu protest, Darializa Avila Chevalier won’t budge
- On Thursday, Democratic congressional nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier of the 13th Congressional District was arrested while protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
- The demonstration drew around 250 protesters to the corner of 1st Avenue and 39th Street, where police began making arrests after demonstrators refused to move ahead of Netanyahu's address.
- Authorities also detained City Council members Chi Oss and Alexa Avil, along with actress Susan Sarandon, while demonstrators held signs reading "Netanyahu, your time is up."
- Roughly 80 to 100 protesters who refused orders were ultimately arrested during the demonstration, and the candidate's social media account posted, "Darializa was just arrested while peacefully protesting."
- Avila Chevalier, a member of the Democratic Socialists, gained prominence after defeating five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the June primary and previously led anti-Israel protests at Columbia University.
