DUP MP Jim Shannon to Face Criminal Proceedings over Assault on Woman
The prosecution will seek to amend paperwork dates as the defence objects, while the case has been adjourned to Sept. 1, court heard.
Strangford MP Jim Shannon faces a common assault charge in Newtownards Magistrates Court over an alleged October 1, 2023, incident involving a woman. The 71-year-old did not attend Monday's hearing.
Elected to the Assembly in 1998, Shannon entered the House of Commons in 2010 as MP for Strangford, a position he still holds. The alleged background of the current case has not been opened in court.
DUP leader Gavin Robinson said his party "became aware of this issue over two years ago" and suspended internal proceedings once the courts became involved. The defence has lodged objections to procedural changes.
Defence counsel Conan Rea objected to the prosecution's application to amend paperwork through a skeleton argument. Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne adjourned the case until September 1.
Robinson stated the matter "is going to have to be determined by the courts" and said he will not "prejudge or add any further detail at the moment." Legal proceedings continue as submissions are evaluated.
