Dulles International Airport board to vote on $19.9B renovation plan
The plan would add new concourses and an underground AeroTrain system as officials say airlines and airport revenue will cover the cost.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority committee voted Wednesday to recommend board approval of the first $15.5 billion piece of a $19.9 billion renovation for Washington Dulles International Airport.
After Trump announced a more than $22 billion makeover of Dulles, questions arose about taxpayer liability. Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority leaders addressed those concerns, emphasizing the project relies on Municipal bonds and airline payments, not tax money.
The proposal includes new concourses, an underground AeroTrain, and additional moving sidewalks to replace mobile lounges, while the Dulles International Airport main terminal will be preserved during internal upgrades.
MWAA President and CEO Jack Potter disputed erroneous reports claiming $90 per-passenger costs, stating updated projections show figures rising to between $60 and $65 over 12 to 15 years with no direct surcharge.
The full buildout will unfold over roughly 15 years, with main terminal reconstruction beginning in late 2027 if approved. Construction on a new Terminal is already underway, funded with $4.4 billion from Biden.
