DHS Says Duckworth Staffer Misrepresented Role to Aid Release of Detained Immigrant
A Senate staffer used a falsified Department of Homeland Security form to gain detainee access, prompting ICE to demand a response by Nov. 17, officials said.
- On Oct. 29, DHS says a member of Sen. Tammy Duckworth's office entered an ICE field office in St. Louis, Illinois and claimed to be the detainee's attorney at 1:29 p.m.
- A G-28 form allows attorneys to represent clients and receive agency correspondence, and Lyons wrote that York claimed to work for the law firm and obtained a signed form, but the law firm filed a G-28 electronically without Mr. Ayuzo's signature.
- After getting a release order, investigators found paperwork inconsistencies when Suarez Law Office electronically filed a G-28 lacking Jose Ismeal Ayuzo Sandoval's signature, and ICE said it could not verify Edward York's attorney status.
- ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons urged answers from Sen. Tammy Duckworth's office by Nov. 17 about York's employment, possible lies on government documents, and suspected Suarez Law Office collusion; Duckworth's office did not immediately respond.
- ICE says the staffer told agents he represented Jose Ismeal Ayuzo Sandoval, 40-year-old detainee previously deported four times with a DUI conviction, while a Montgomery County Illinois Democrats Facebook post and picture drew agency suspicion.
