Dubious AI detectors drive 'pay-to-humanize' scam
Fraudulent AI text detectors mislabel human writing as AI-generated and charge up to $9.99 for cleanup, risking reputation damage and misinformation, AFP found.
- AFP researchers identified three AI detectors—JustDone AI, TextGuard, and Refinely—that mislabel authentic writing as AI-generated and charge users up to $9.99 to "humanize" the text.
- The tools flagged diverse content ranging from an acclaimed 1916 Hungarian classic to US-Iran war reports. JustDone AI wrongly concluded one war report contained "88% AI content" before offering to scrub the alleged traces for a fee.
- Users on review platforms complained that "even with 100% human-written material, JustDone still flags it as AI." The site claims the resulting text is "100% unique text," locking the promised fix behind a paywall charging up to $9.99.
- TextGuard's support team told AFP, "Our system operates using modern AI models, and the results it provides are considered accurate within our technology." Despite this defense, AFP testing confirmed the tools misidentified authentic text across four languages.
- Researchers warn this emerging crop of fraudulent tools poses significant risk, easily weaponized to discredit authentic content and tarnish reputations. These scams exploit demand for accuracy while undermining trust in digital verification systems.
