Turkey Warns Kurdish and Other Groups in Syria Against Pursuing Autonomy
SOUTHERN SYRIA, SUWAYDA PROVINCE, JUL 22 – Turkey's Foreign Minister warns that any move toward Syrian division threatens national security and signals possible intervention to counter Israel's destabilization efforts.
- In Suwayda province, fighting broke out on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and Druze militias.
- Since Dec. 8, 2024, the new Syrian government has worked to restore order, and Turkey supports its efforts while condemning Israeli actions as destabilizing.
- In response to hostilities, Israel bombed Suwayda convoys of government forces, Israel cited the “protection of Druze communities” as justification.
- On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that any attempt to divide Syria by force would be a direct security threat and could prompt intervention.
- In response to the violence, the Syrian government announced four ceasefire deals in Suwayda, the latest brokered Saturday, and Turkey supports future integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into Syria’s national army.
