Boater Charged in Deadly River Crash Tested Double Legal Limit for DUI, Prosecutors Say
Prosecutors say Stevenson was nearly three times the legal alcohol limit and was speeding at about 80 mph in a no-wake zone.
- On Saturday, a high-speed boat crash on the Fox River in McHenry County killed 48-year-old Magdalena Jablonska of Des Plaines, leading to reckless homicide and aggravated DUI charges against Richard Stevenson, 45, of Lisle.
- Prosecutors allege Stevenson operated his 31-foot pontoon at nearly 80 mph through a no-wake zone while intoxicated, with testing showing a blood alcohol concentration of 0.236—nearly three times the legal limit.
- The 31-foot pontoon went over the top of the 20-foot Crownline, causing Jablonska's death from blunt force injuries to her head and body, while her husband operating the other boat was hospitalized in critical condition.
- During a Monday hearing, Judge Cynthia Lamb ordered Stevenson to remain in custody, ruling he poses "a real and present threat" to the community given his extensive history of reckless driving and DUI convictions.
- Illinois Conservation Police are seeking public assistance with any photos or video from the crash site near the 1800 block of South Fernwood Lane, with Stevenson scheduled to return to court August 5.
