Pennsylvania Charges 17 in North Philadelphia Coffee Shop Drug Ring

Authorities said the group used a coffee shop front to sell crack and cocaine, and recovered dozens of guns, cash and drug paraphernalia.

  • On Wednesday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced arrests of 17 alleged members of the Louis Alexander Drug Trafficking Organization, which operated a North Philadelphia coffee shop as a front for selling and manufacturing cocaine.
  • The group, led by 56-year-old Louis Alexander, used Cumberland Coffee and Snacks at West Cumberland and North Cleveland streets as its base; Senior Deputy Attorney General Michael Barry said the gang had operated in the neighborhood for over a decade.
  • Police seized more than four pounds of cocaine, 130 pounds of marijuana, fentanyl, ecstasy pills, 27 firearms and thousands in cash during searches at about 30 locations across North Philadelphia, Delaware County and New Jersey.
  • Gang leader Louis Alexander is being held on $750,000 bail while the 17 defendants face felony charges including corrupt organizations and weapons offenses; those on parole or probation will receive additional punishment.
  • Attorney General Sunday stated the goal is to "obliterate" the entire organization to maximize community impact, while investigations into the group's weapons stockpile remain ongoing; Sunday is set to discuss drug enforcement and fentanyl abuse Thursday in Allentown with FBI Director Kash Patel.
