Northern B.C. Driving Study Aims to Improve Wildfire Evacuations
The simulator will measure how local drivers respond in normal and wildfire scenarios to help calibrate a traffic model for evacuation planning.
PhD candidate Alireza Noory is recruiting adult volunteers from Prince George to drive UNBCSIM, a simulator recreating a section of Highway 97 North, to study driver behavior during wildfire evacuations.
Current evacuation models often rely on general assumptions from other communities rather than region-specific data, prompting Noory to develop the simulator to provide evidence about how local drivers respond during wildfire emergencies.
The team will validate simulator accuracy by comparing speed data with floating-car measurements, while measuring how drivers accelerate, brake, and adjust speed in typical and wildfire scenarios.
Data collected will calibrate a computerized traffic model of Prince George, enabling city officials and emergency planners to examine evacuation travel times, congestion, and road closures before an actual emergency occurs.
Noory received a Canadian copyright certificate protecting the simulator as original research software, positioning it as a repeatable framework other wildfire-prone northern communities could adapt for evacuation planning.
