Drivers warned of £1,000 fines for doing this common gesture on UK roads
First Response Finance said tailgating and horn use are major road-rage triggers, and improper beeping can bring a £1,000 penalty.
UK drivers face warnings that improper car horn use can result in fines reaching £1,000, as using horns to signal anger or say goodbye violates the Highway Code.
According to Rule 112 of the Highway Code, motorists should only sound horns to warn other road users of their presence while moving, making usage while stationary illegal.
Tom Preston, CEO at Hippo Leasing, explained that improper honking could result in an immediate £30 Fixed Penalty Notice, which can escalate to £1,000 if challenged in court and left unpaid.
Preston warned that other seemingly harmless gestures, such as waving or flashing headlights, can be classed as careless driving, potentially leading to penalty points.
New data from First Response Finance shows 33% of drivers find tailgating the most frustrating road behavior, while 30% of Brits admit to using beeping or honking to communicate frustration.
