Driver who inhaled laughing gas before killing 81-year-old cyclist in hit-and-run detained
SOUTH YORKSHIRE, JUL 21 – Cain Byrne, banned from driving for over 17 years, was sentenced to 11.5 years for killing cyclist Graham Slinn while under the influence of nitrous oxide and speeding.
- On April 4, 20-year-old Cain Byrne, driving a Volkswagen Golf in Chesterfield, hit 81-year-old Graham Slinn while he was lawfully walking across a pedestrian crossing near Todwick, South Yorkshire.
- Byrne, who never held a driving licence and was disqualified, sped through a red light well over the 50mph limit and inhaled nitrous oxide gas before and after the collision, then fled the scene with two passengers.
- Slinn, a retired builder and devoted cyclist married for nearly 60 years, was thrown at least 15ft in the air by the impact and died at the scene, leaving his family devastated by a death they describe as 100% avoidable.
- Judge Jeremy Richardson KC sentenced Byrne to 11 years and six months in a young offenders institution with a 17-year and eight-month driving ban, calling him a dangerous offender whose public protection is essential due to a record of 27 convictions including dangerous driving.
- The case highlights ongoing concerns over reckless driving and drug use behind the wheel, with the judge emphasizing Byrne's ingrained criminal behaviour and the need for public safety measures to prevent recurrence.
