At least 12 shot after SUV pulls up and opens fire on a crowd, Chicago police say
Police said two people in a red SUV fired into a crowd, leaving 12 injured and one 26-year-old man in critical condition.
Two shooters in a red SUV opened fire on a crowd in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood on Friday night, injuring at least 12 people. Chicago Police Department officers responded to the 200 block of West 95th Street shortly after 11 p.m.
The victims, ranging in age from 17 to 47, were transported to four hospitals for treatment. Investigators found at least 100 evidence markers at the scene, indicating a high volume of gunfire.
Friday's incident occurred on Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. Citywide, police reported at least 21 people shot and four deaths since Friday afternoon, placing this shooting within broader weekend violence.
Area Two detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the drive-by shooting, though no suspects were in custody as of Saturday. Officials have not provided further information regarding motives or the shooters' identities.
Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for gun crime victims, told CBS News the shooting was a tragedy, stating "Fireworks should not turn into gunshots" on a day meant for celebration. The investigation remains ongoing.
