On Tuesday, July 8, a 65-year-old highways worker from Kent died on the M23 near Gatwick Airport following a collision involving a van. Police arrested the 38-year-old driver from Croydon on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving.
Emergency services responded to the southbound carriageway at Junction 9 shortly before 1 a.m., prompting immediate road closures and diversions until late morning as authorities secured the scene.
Sergeant Chris Ambrose of Sussex Police confirmed officers are "fully investigating the circumstances" of the crash, and investigators appeal for witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage to contact them quoting Operation Oakcross.
The arrested driver remains in custody while detectives continue their inquiries; authorities confirmed the police scene has been stood down, with the motorway expected to reopen soon.
Sussex Police stated the worker's next of kin have been informed, with the agency extending their thoughts to the family. The incident underscores the dangers faced by those working to keep roads safe.
