EARTHQUAKE BATTERS WESTERN COLOMBIA
Rescuers have pulled pets from collapsed buildings as at least 273 people were killed and thousands more were injured in the quake zone, officials said.
- On Thursday, rescuers pulled a cat named Polux from the rubble of an apartment in Cali, Colombia, reuniting the animal with owner 56-year-old lawyer Vickye Giraldo.
- Monday's 7.4 magnitude earthquake devastated Colombia's third-largest city and surrounding regions, killing at least 273 people and destroying over 12,000 homes.
- Although the critical 72-hour window to find survivors closed Thursday, Giraldo called the recovery of her cat a "dream come true" after days of uncertainty.
- Volunteer Nelson Vidales told AFP, "I know there are a lot of people thinking about humans, but the time must come when pets are looked for too."
- Other residents like Andrea Paredes continue searching for missing pets as rescuers navigate buildings that slant dangerously to one side, with her husband having "managed to grab one little dog" before fleeing.
