Residents said the Allied Democratic Forces burned and looted homes, and officials warned the death toll could rise as several people remained missing.
An Islamic State-linked group called the Allied Democratic Forces attacked villages in Congo near the Uganda border, killing at least 40 people and burning homes.
The attacks occurred overnight from Wednesday through Thursday in border villages of Beni territory and Ituri province in Congo.
The Allied Democratic Forces have roots in Uganda and were accused by Amnesty International of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Eastern Congo faces violence from about 100 rebel groups, including the M23 group, which has seized key cities.
At least 36 people have been killed since Tuesday 5 May in several attacks by the ADF rebels, linked to the jihadist Islamic State group, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to local and security sources, cited by AFP.
