Major Motorway Closed Due to Fire
National Highways said fire crews are extinguishing a field fire and traffic officers are managing a diversion with delays of up to 20 minutes.
National Highways closed the M1 southbound between J28 and J26 on Tuesday after a "large fire" broke out in an adjacent field, bringing traffic to a halt.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the blaze, which sent heavy smoke onto the motorway and forced emergency closure of the southbound carriageway.
Drivers have been told to "expect delays" of up to 20 minutes with 2 miles of congestion building on the approach as lanes remain closed.
Diversion traffic is advised to follow the hollow square symbol, exiting at J28, following the A38 to the A610 Hartshay Interchange at Ripley, through Codnor, and re-joining at J26.
A 24/7 contact centre team is available on 0300 123 5000 for updates; officials advise travelers to "plan ahead" and consider delaying journeys to avoid congestion.
