Dr. ChatGPT is getting remarkably good at diagnosing health problems - but actual doctors are still better at weighing treatment options
Artificial intelligence is nearing and sometimes surpassing doctors' accuracy in diagnosing health problems.
OpenAI's o1 model achieved 78% accuracy diagnosing complex cases and outperformed experienced emergency room doctors, according to an April 2026 study.
While diagnosis accuracy is high, doctors also decide on tests, treatments, and follow-up actions for patients.
Doctors use judgment about evidence reliability and patient values to choose the best treatment paths, which AI currently cannot fully replicate.
